I have a 1997 F-150 4x4 4.6L auto, that shivers when shifting into drive & overdrive. What am I looking at for repairs?

The shivering may be transmission shudder. If so, dropping and cleaning the pan and magnet, replacing the filter, and refilling with Mercon V may solve the problem. Most Ford transmission pan gaskets are reuseable for life--they are awesome. Ford F-150 transmissions are very tough. When I help people out, I always use full synthetic ATF (e.g. Mobil 1 Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF). Cost would be around $65, if you do the work yourself and only replace the fluid in the pan (5 quarts). If this improves the situation, put the truck on a regular maintenance schedule to do this every 30,000 miles. Synthetics really improve shifting and gas mileage in cold weather.
