Your dog has to be rid of the worms; you can see them in his stool, and if you don't see them but think he has worms, take a sample of his stool to the vet to be tested and get medication to be rid of them.

If he has a lot of worms, you will start to see him in his stool. You can either take him in for an exam and wormer, or you can go to petsmart/petco and get a wormer.
I have a lot of luck with Safegaurd brand wormers.. You can also do your own research to see what type of worms he has. Small, rice-like worms are tapeworms, and you need to purchase a wormer specifically for tapeworms.. If they are long and stringy, then they are roundworms.. and you need to purchase a specific wormer for roundworms.

If you have reason to believe he has worms, a stool check is beneficial in that you know what you are dealing with, to go with the worms that you can actually see, there are worms and parasites that you cannot see. Hookworms, Whipworms, coccidia and giardia are all pretty common culprits. If you go with a dewormer from a pet supply store read the label and make sure it is broad spectrum. Just one more quick thought if you are seeing tapeworms along with the meds to kill them you will need to use a flea prevention, since tapeworms are the result of ingesting a flea.
