I have a 1998 honda accord 4 cyl automatic with less than 100k miles. Kept up with required maintenance. No starting problems. This car has been great! The symptoms my car is having include:

Periodically, after initial startup in morning, it will not accelarate past 20mph. If I turn off car and restart - no problem with accelaration.
Sometimes upon accelaration it will jerk forward (feels like it gets kicked in butt). After driving a few miles with no start and stop, the jerk stops on accelaration.
When the car is parked and turned off, if you step on the brake you can hear a "click" in the gear shift.

A friend thinks it could be the silenoid on the transmission. Another friend thinks it's the transmission.
What does anyone else think?

If the problem is not engine related, the Variable Speed Sensor may be bad. It's located on top of the transmission and is easy to replace. It will affect how the transmission shifts. Have you checked for codes?

As an aside, make sure the transmision fluid has been changed in the last 30,000 miles.
