How long before the swelling returns to normal after the operation?

I would think about a week or two. Most importantly is that the swelling goes down, even if its gradual. If you start to notice more swelling, redness, more pain or any drainage from the operative site, you should contact your doctor, you may have an infection.

In answer to the question about recovery time, it takes a full two months to feel normal again. I had some nerve damage from the operation and had tongue swelling and difficulty swallowing for at least two weeks post-op. First two weeks are difficult but once you start to improve, improvement is rapid. My endarterectomy was on January 9th and I am now 95% recovered. I ran a 5K race last Saturday at the age of 77.
