Hi, I live in a coop apartment. My bathroom has a leak in the ceiling (more towards the side, not center) that began to drip down the side of the wall. I notified the apartment above me, that is currently gut renovating their apartment (which includes bathrooms in the exact spots that I have mine.) They came down and said it was not an active leak because they used some sort of gadget to test the wall. (Sorry I am so out of the lingo). They scraped off the damaged paint on the wall, and plastered, about a month ago. They did not repaint yet. Low and behold, I was taking a shower today, and the leak was back in the same spot and spread more towards the center of the ceiling. Could it be that this leak is actually from my own apartment? I have never had a problem until these guys decided to gut renovate an apartment-- for the second time in 3 years.

I think your first thoughts were on the right line. Your dupply and drain pipes are not in your ceiling, if anything they are in your floor. In your floor just like the apaprtment above you. Do you own or rent?

I own, but it is a coop.

Never involved with a coop but they are likely run like a Home Owners Association, do you pay dues or anything for common area upkeep? I'd call the upstairs neighor again or your coop manager. This is someone else issue to repair but your ceiling section must be removed and allowed to fully dry before any patch of paster. Sometimes renovation jobs screw up pipes but other times a sopilled bucket of water will run down through the floors licky split and appear to be a plumbing leak.

If you weren't in there taking a shower then you would not have seen it. LOL just playing with you. I think the leak and your shower are not related.
