I inured my toenail hiking at the end of October. I was coming down the trail and my nail kept hitting the front of my boot. I guess the nail was a little too long, but there wasn't much I could do about it without clippers. Anyway The nail is definitely going to come off. But it is also quite sore. Can I soak it in Epson Salt to relieve pain and inflammation. Should I try to take it off. I'm sure there is some new nail underneath, but I don't know how much.

Unfortunately, sore toe, it isn't that easy. You are going to need medical attention; please don't try and take the nail off yourself. Even people with no medical issues can get extremely infected toenail problems in the nail bed because of circulation of quantity and quality of blood to that area, which is necessary to the healing process.

Take the easy road out and get at least a diagnosis and probably a professional removal if that is indeed what it needs.

To Answer your question, no, Epsom salts will not disinfect, but will soften the skin up to make it less painful. Also, for the time being, soak in warm salt water solution to clean it out, and most important, visit a clinic or your doctor.
