View Full Version : Do I need a dedicated line just for my treadmill?

My treadmill started making awkward sounds so I called in my warranty and they sent a guy over. He said that my "controller" for the treadmill broke because I had too much stuff plugged into a surge protector and my treadmill wasn't getting enough power. In addition he said that I needed to call an electrician to install a "15 amp dedicated line non GFI". He said he would order a controller and install it after I had installed this dedicated line.

From my the manual: When connecting the power cord, plug the power cord into a surge suppressor and plug the surge suppressor into a grounded circuit capable of carrying 15 or more amps. No other appliance should be on the same circuit. Do not use an extension cord.

Is he correct in that I need to install this dedicated line? Or am I just fine directly plugging in my treadmill into the wall? Is there an inexpensive way to check if my circuit can carry 15 amps? I like in America if that helps.

Thanks in advance for a response!

Ur manual has told u that it should be a dedicated line. If u disconnect everything else on the line u are using it would be the same as a dedicated line as long as nothing else is put on it. This a very hard thing to do. U would have to find which outlets are controlled by the breaker and isolate them so they would not be used. U could use child plug caps to close off these outlets.

I agree with Chuck and also think the power strip surge protector is not a good idea. It acts pretty much like an extension cord.
