I am trying to install a gfi to a garbage disposal that was previously hard wired I cut the wire off @ the disposal have 1 hot 1 neutral and a ground they are live when I hit the switch up top leading to the disposal but when I hook up the gfi correctly hot brass sid (black wire) white wire silver side and ground wire to the ground screw my gfi will not function I can't reset because both buttons are depressed

If both buttons are depressed, you have a bad GF. Don't think Garbage disposals need to be ground faulted

If the GFI does not have power it will not trip or reset. Both buttons in means it is reset and should work. Try turning it on and tripping the GFI.
I agree with 0641, why are you GFI'ing it in the first place?
