I am trying to replace a lamp that hangs from the ceiling. The electrical box in the ceiling contains the main powere supply wires, one set for the wall dimmer switch and one set of wires for an electrical outlet on another wall. I've connected the black wire from the supply line to the black of the outlet as well as the black from the switch wires. I've connected one of the lamp wires (both are black) to the white wire from the switch. The other lamp wire has been connected to the white wires from the supply line and the outlet. All grounding wires are connected to the electrical box in the ceiling. However the light does not turn on but the wall outlet does receive power. What am I doing wrong? The continuity of the switch wires is good. Outlet power confirmed with use of an electrical meter as has the continuity of the switch wires. The light does work if connected directly to the main power, however it would stay on as long as the breaker is turned on. What am I doing wrong - am I missing something here.

If you have a white wire on the switch, you most likely have a switch loop. For the light, find the hot black at the ceiling and connect a pigtail to the white from the wall switch. Now, take the black on the wall switch and connect it to the black on the light fixture and the ceiling white to the lamp white. Should work now. Try this and let us know how it works out.

The hot black at the ceiling is connected to the outlet black and has a pigtail connected to the switch white. The switch black is connected to the black on the lamp. The ceiling white is connected to the outlet white as well as the lamp white. Lamp still does not work. Even tried reversing the two lamp wires

It sounds like it is wired properly. You said the light works if connected to the hot and white ceiling wires-correct? Have you checked to make sure you have power at the switch? I would check switch continuity. Other than that, interrupting the hot black back to the light is the way to go.

Maybe bad switch?
