I purchased a brand new home (New Construction), have city water, and an all house water filter. I went to fill my jetted tub for the first time this evening and the water was brown. I went to the sink, ran the hot water -- it was brown. Emptied the sink, filled it again with cold water it was clear. Ran the hot again, it was brown. This is a brand new Hot water heater... My home is still under warranty --
If I go back to the builder I want to make sure I'm for armed. Is it possible for the heater to be defective -- could this be rust already? I moved in October of 2006. I have a black Cast iron kitchen sink so I never noticed this before. This was the first opportunity I've had to attempt to take a relaxing bath. And allow the hot water to build up next to a white background. Thanks for your help!

It's difficult to tell but if I had to guess I would place the blame on a faulty water heater. To check it out place a hose on the boiler drain and open up the valve. If the water comes out brown,(rust?) then the water heater's defective and should be replaced at no cost to you. Regards, Tom

I like the previous answer about a hose at the water heater. I have run across this brown water problem before. It has always been a rusty piece of metal somewhere. On one I fould a black iron pipe connected in the water distribution at the meter. On another I found a black iron pipe at the water heater. On another I found a black iron pipe on the tub spout outlet.
