My daughter is 5 months pregnant with a baby girl, and her doctor found urine in the babies kidney on the ultrasound. Now she has to see a specialist. What does that mean?

Hi davey55,

They will want to do a more through check as to the possible cause for the urine retention. It can be due to a number of possibilities that vary in their seriousness of risk to baby. For example, it may be due to a concern with how the organ developed or it may be due to a blockage.

They can also determine whether the issue is with the kidney itself or if that is a symptom of a concern elsewhere.

Once they are able to determine a definite, or likely, cause they can decide what treatment options may or may not be necessary. Some things they may be able to take a wait and see approach, some things they would want to treat right after birth. There are even some situations that would allow treatment while your daughter is still pregnant.

I know it is a frightening thing to consider as there is no way to know what the possible cause might be. Did her doctor say anything to her? See what determination is made and whether a treatment is necessary and, if so, at what stage. All you can do right now is be supportive of your daughter and assure her that her doctors will check everything out to see what needs to be done next.
