I have now been charged for the last two months an over usage charge of 90 pound last month and 40 pound this month... The usage times have taken place at 11pm between 10am... when I am in bed asleep! Every night I switch off all the lights and electric plug sockets around my home. My computer, router are also switched off and unplugged from the wall! I feel that I am being duped out of my hard earned money... I don't down load games or nothing... I'm a complete novice. Just to try it out I tried to down load a game last week and it told my it would take 3yrs!advice really needed... Who is at fault?

My first thought would be some one on your wireless, if it is only you and or your family using the connection you could use MAC address filtering and only allow your devices to connect. However you said the router was turned off is the modem separate from the router and is it turned off? Another thought is that someone could have spliced into your phone (if it is DSL) or other carrier line and is using your service.

Not too sure if the modem and the router are separate, but there is nothing left switched on during the night. My phone line has not worked for a few weeks now... I now wonder if this is the problem? It is a bt phone line... I have had a spread sheet sent me from supplier and it has overage... I have phoned them but they don't even seem to know what overage means I have googled it and it says its to do with mobile phone... things just seem so strange... dont really know now what the right thing to do is?

If you use your mobile phone to access the internet, and it counts on your usage, many phones do automatic updates and other internet connections all by themselves. People who travel to other nations find this when they get several 1000 dollar bills for what their phones do.

Thank you for your response Fr chuck.. But I haven't got phones or my kids that go on the Internet. Having a computer in my house is a step in the right direction to the 21st centry... one step at a time! Have had though what seems like might be positive response from broad band supplier... it appears that there data charts are incorrect! In fact wrong by a long shot... I have actually used 17kb and not the 76 they claim! No apology yet but I'm just got a sit back now and wait for them to investigate...

Hi there, I notice you are in the UK so I maybe able to help better, as I'm a Brit as well.

Is this bill from your internet provider and have they provided a detailed breakdown of the alleged activity ?
When you turn everything off at night, does that include the internet router that you have ?
