My washing machine get half way through a cycle, then stops, if I nudge the dail by a milimetre or so it carries on. Then it comes to the fast spin which it won't do, it just makes a humming noise and if I touch it it feels like its vibrating, meaning: it doing somethig but not spinning. I have cleaned the filtre and have been using Calgon.

If you have a top load washer, there is a coupler that goes between the motor and the gearbox. The coupler is usually made of (mostly) plastic. There are usually only 3 or 4 prongs on the coupler. They will break off over time. If they all break, the motor will turn but nothing will happen.
Coupler costs are minimal ($40 - $60). The problem is: Can you replace the coupler yourself?
If not, you will have to call a service person. That's where the cost comes in.
