400 ulema from throughout the world has declared Cigaratte smoking haraam on the basis of one Quranic verse which says:
"and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction…" - Holy Qur'an, Surah Al-Baqara,[2:195]

What does haram mean? Is that like a sin or something. Forgive me because I really don't know much about Islam and the teachings of Islam.

Haraam, in essence, means forbidden. From the point of view of mainstream religions, they would be the ten commandments, or the law of the church, catholic dogma, etc.

They are laws set forth by the word of Allah. And they are absolutely NOT allowed.

That said, Allah is forgiving. If you were a smoker, before you reverted to Islam, God understands that it takes some time for you to quit that addiction. But you are NOT to continue smoking, you are to strive to quit and succeed, and never turn back to it.
