I have A 3 year old male St. Bernard who 6 months ago had a seizure we took him to the vet. They said they would put him on medication but it would cause bad kidney problems so we brought him home and he seem to be doing well intill 1 month ago when he had a lot of seizures and then the vet. Told us to put him to sleep and we again choose not to but tonight he again is having a lot of them we need help. There has to be something a reason. Food , or he goes out side and drinks brook water, grass he's eating . Please help any info welcome. THANK YOU Balinda [email protected]

I understand exactly what you are going through. First advice: get a second and third opinion from different vets. We called a local Vet School and received lots of help. There are numerous medications for seizures... some with less severe side effects. There are also numerous causes for seizures. We have had a Lab who had seizures and a friend with a Saint Bernard with the same problem. Our dog's seizures seemed to be brought on by too much excitement... but, again, there are many causes. I resent vets who are too ready to give up on one of our LOVED ONES without a fight. Our dogs seizures were controlled with a mild dose of Valuim. Our friends dog lived to be thirteen, after being diagnosed at five. A seizure did end his life... but it was a happy life. He also gave his family a lot of love and happiness. The best advice I can offer is to find the phone number of a school for Veternary Medicine, talk with a professor and get recommendations.
I am an animal lover with many pets... with numerous problems. I never give up unless I know the situation is hopeless. I hope this has helped and wish you all the best. Another treatment from a different vet may or may not be able to help in this case.

If you got him from a breeder, I would contact them. A good breeder would want to know about the problem and perhaps factor it into future breeding plans.

Hello all, I have a St as well and she is 1 1/2 years old and all of a sudden started having seizures 2 weeks ago. She has been very healthy up until this point. I called my vet and really no help. Last night was very bad. My hiubby and I was woke up by a loud thump down the stairs and a scratching sound on the walls. When we went down stairs she was laying the seizing very badly. This is the 2nd one in 10 days and I'm so scared and really need some advice. She is very well taken care of and I have read some other entries about excitement and heat but this last seizure was at 3am and there was none of those issues in hand. If you have any advice please let me know.

Seizures are very scarry, and poorly understood. There is no hidden, magic cure. If your vet doesn't seem to be helpful, maybe try another as I suggested in the other case.
