Your income tax return is a piece of paper that you file every year. There is not any reason for these companies to take your return. But, to answer your question, no they cannot take your income tax return. You send it to the IRS and no credit organization can intercept the return.

Now, if you are expecting a refund from the government after filing your return, and you are wondering if the credit card companies can just intercept it or take it, they cannot. However, if these companies have a judgment against you, your bank account, your home, anything tangible that you own, can be attached if they choose to collect on that judgment.

The real question here is, why have you placed yourself in a position to have not just one, but three credit card companies coming after you? Why didn't you just pay the bills so you don't have to go through life worrying about them chasing after you all the time? That must be a very unpleasant and nerve wracking way to live.

Two of the three account in collection are fraudulent accounts that still appear on my credit report. I have dispued these over the years and only one account has been deleted from my credit file. I asked this question because I have heard from someone that they can take you tax return and just needed this to be clarified for me.

Usually, there are things that have happened that have made it difficult for them to pay their bills such as job loss, illness, etc. People who are in financial trouble do not usually get themselves in trouble on purpose.
There are too many times on this board that members have passed judgement on people instead of just simply answering their question.

You are right Miranda, however I asked a question out of personal curiosity. If lsdynasty had explained a bit more in her original posting, I wouldn't have asked. Whether it is appropriate to ask the question is another matter I guess.

First, let me say that Ruby has been very much an asset to this site since she joined. I've seen a lot of excellent advice from her.

That being said, I can understand her question, but I think it could have been worded a little better. It did come across as judgemental, though I don't think she meant that.

As Ruby indicated, they can't just take your tax REFUND (as she also said your return is a document you file, the refund is an overpayment of taxes returned to you). In most cases, they cannot intercept your refund, only government agencies that you are indebted to can do that. Before they can attach ANY assets of yours, you have to sued and have a judgement issued against you.

But I have to ask why have you let this languish so long. About a year ago, I found an account on my credit report that I did not recall. It listed a small amount (a few hundred) that was several months overdue. Since I never got any statements about the account or heard from anyone about these past due payments I disputed the account. Within 60 days the account was removed from my credit reports.

If these are indeed fraudulent acounts, then they should have been removed quickly.

Like I said, I did not mean any disrespect to Ruby. It just irritates me when I see people passing judgement (maybe that was not her intentions). I just felt like saying something because this happens a lot. Usually in the pregnancy and new motherhood section. Has anyone else seen this happen?

Ruby, I apologize for calling you out specifically. There are other people on here who have been pretty rude. What you said was nothing horrible, I have seen much worse.
