Have an upstairs bedroom door that will not close. Have to push and force it close, then struggle to open it. Was told it needed to be replumbed. How do I go about doing that?

The person who gave you that advice is only close. If a door used to work but now sticks its because of movement in the door frame. Rather than replumbing the door frame which is not easy most of use would plane off the excess material on the sticking surface.

Look at the line where the door and jamb meet. Is it straight or crooked. Some things to consider are tightening all the hinge screws, shimming out the hinges if the door is crooked, planing or belt sanding the door. Is this the only door that does this?

Hi Leatha,

While I agree with the 2 previous answers in principal I would suggest taking the least evasive measure first. As per ma0641, definitely make sure to tighten all of the hinge screws while making sure none of the screws are stripped out. If your door still does not close properly here is a trick have been utilizing with great success for several years.

Take two shims (cedar, pine or composite -- $1.50 normally for a pack of 8)... Hold them together in the door jamb on the latch side of the door... force the door close, binding the shims in the jamb. The net affect will be to slightly adjust the door jamb without moving any trim. It works 4 times out of 5. Do not be afraid to use a bit of force to make the "adjustment". If this does not work than I think you will have to get out the belt sander or preferably, planer.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
