Hi,

I entered US in June 2011 on L1B visa and by November 30th I will be completing 181 days. For this time, I didn't give any tax as I were given an allowance by my company and the source of allowance was India.

Now my stay in US got extended for another 2 months. As per my understanding I have to pay tax from June to November. Can you please tell me how much tax do I need to pay and is there any part of my allowance that I can get tax exempted. To get tax exemption do I need to produce the relevant bills.

Thanks,
Neev

If you complete Substantial Presence Test, you will file Dual Status tax return. You are nonresident before June 2011 and resident after June 2011. If you are leaving within one year of your arrival in U.S. you can deduct travel expenses (from India to U.S. and back), lodging in U.S. and meals expenses as itemized deduction on schedule A (Form 1040). Use Form 2106 or 2106-EZ to figure your allowable expenses that you claim on line 9 of Schedule A.
