Assuming you are on a month to month lease now... and not in a unexpired longer term lease that would normally expire beyond the next 30 days they can. What I mean by that... is if you have a lease due to expire in February 2012, they can't. If you are month to month, meaning you have no signed lease in effect NOW, they only have to give you 30 notice. Usually to take effect on the last day of the month.
Now... there is a qualifier that might change that...
Did they give a reason for this? The reason is actually quite important in this case. And will be needed to determine an exact answer.

If you ask, may I assume they did?
But is it a rent control property?
Do you have a lease ?
What was the reason for the notice

More details would help. But generally ANY landlord can give a 30 day notice to vacate if, the tenant's lease has expired and they are on a month to month basis or if there is a breach of the lease.
