I hope someone can help us! We just purchased a home that was in foreclosure and unoccupied for 2 years. The house smelled a little musty, but we figured it would clear up once the house was opened up, painted, etc. It has, but 1 of the bathrooms has a very strong metallic smell to it which seems to be coming from where the toilet is. We have radiant heat, and the heater in that bathroom runs along the wall and next to the toilet. It is the newer style that just runs along the floor. It does have rust on it, but only on the half closest to the toilet. The previous owners had put tile on the floor, but attached it directly to the sub floor. I don't know if that's related or not.
Does anyone have any ideas on what the smell is and how to get rid of it?

Buying a 2 year old foreclosure can be a real test of your skills. Tile attached directly to a sub in a bathroom is likely a band aide to cover other issues. The tile should come up, cement board down and then new tile. Try to find the source of the moisture that allowed the rust to form.

The tile will be removed for several reasons: it's not installed properly, it's wall tile, and it's ugly :) In order to do that, we'll have to pull out the toilet. I'm hoping we will find some answers by doing this. We know that our pipes are cast iron, so with any luck, we'll uncover the source. We had also discovered yesterday that the closet below it (in the basement) had uncapped plumbing for a shower behind the paneling. My husband sealed those pipes. Related? We'll see.

Could be related. It may also have been a vent stack that was not properly installed. If it was a vent then capping was not a good move. Any chance you can post a picture of that open pipe?

The plumbing he sealed off was definitely for a shower that no longer exsists. I will take some photos and post them. I'm grateful for your time!
