What if the father of my son wants to give up parental rights to avoid paying child support can I still receive child support?

Yes you can. If the child is adopted then the child support ends. BTW he just can't give up his rights that easily to avoid paying child support. The court won't entertain this at all.

The father can not just give up his rights, who ever told you this lied to you. So if he is telling you this, just laugh at him, I mean roll in the floor laugh at him.
