I've had a stubborn clog for a while and used Google to find some ideas on how to fix it (not a smart idea.. ) Well someone said to take off the over flow cover and stick a hanger with a small hook on the end down the hole and try to pull out what might be causing the clog.. so I took the cover off and when I tried to pull the hanger back up.. IT WAS STUCK! It's hooked onto something about three or four inches down and I can't get to it! Help please :(

Are we talking about a bathtub overflow here or some other fixture? Please give more information, I'm sure someone can help you out.

Sorry! Yes a bath tub over flow, I've been trying to manipulate the hanger for HOURS with no luck of getting it unstuck!

Hi Sbic17

You should be able to pull the hanger out if you yank hard. However, you could end up pulling the tub drain overflow pipe up and out so do be careful.

Did you already pull up and remove the trip lever assembly (if present)? If the trip lever is present then remove it... may come up and out with the hanger here. If you don't have a trip lever assembly then you must have a spin/lift type of drain assembly and this part will not apply to you.

If you are yanking hard and still can't get the hanger out then you may need to gain access to the back of the tub drain through an access panel. Is there an access panel behind the tub? If so, you may want to access the drain and then loosen the large nut at the middle top of the drain assembly top that holds the overflow pipe into place and see if you can pull the hanger and overflow tube up and out with whatever is causing the hang up.

Let us know what happens, OK?

Mark

I have been trying to yank hard with no luck!
I don't have a trip lever assembly, I have a spin and lift drain.
I live in an apartment and I don't know how I could get access to the back of the tub?
I may try yanking it again, I feel like I haven't been yanking my hardest with fear that something might break..

Yank hell out of that hanger! You're going to hafta put enough pressure on that hanger to straighten out the hook you put into it. OK! Let's assume you have the hanger out. What's next?
Purchase a hand crank snake and send it down the overflow tube, (see image). You will hit the trap return bend about 18" down but crank and push around that and you should have less the 15 more feet to put out. Pull out the snake and flush with half a tub of hot water. Good luck and in the future remember a hanger will not replace a snake. Leave them in your closet. Tom

I got the hanger out! And speedball, I bought a Cobra Drain Clean Out Auger (http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1280066&cp=2568443.2568452.2631224.2631250) and I tried putting it down the overflow but like you said I hit a spot where it wouldn't go down easily anymore.. I tried to force it down or wiggle it a bit and it seems like it was going down a little bit but I feel like it might be coiling or bending in the drain.. I'm not really sure where to go from here

You don't have any options left if you want to clear your clog. The return bend in the trap is what you're hung up on. The snake will go around it. You just have to crank and push a little bit at a time. Try again. Good luck, Tom
