I have a friend who has to appear in small claims court, but cannot afford to take off work. Can I represent him in a California Small Claims Court? I was not present during the verbal contract agreement or when the plaintiff received money, but my friend has provided me with all the info.

Are you licensed to practice law in California?

No--just a friend he has asked to present the information in court.

In that case the answer is "no".

Your friend might consider asking for a continuance.

Does your friend have difficulty with the English language or some other need for an advocate (other than being nervous about a Court appearance)?

You can not represent your friend in court as you are not an attorney. Your friend will have to be there in person to handle his own affairs. Attorneys are not usually present in Small Claims cases.

Your friend needs to show up otherwise a judgment in favor of the Plaintiff will be a slam dunk.
