I'm asking for a friend of mine who lost her job due to an extended illness. She is now getting disability. It's a enough to pay her mortgage. Gas and lights but not enough to pay her credit cards. Can credit cards companies put a lien on her house?

Perhaps, they will have to get a judgement first and normally they will try to find bank accounts if any to freeze and attach any money there.
A lien on the home is normally about the last thing they do, since that may not get them money for years and years. They will have to wait till she sells the house, or until she dies. And they risk, her defaulting in the 1st loan, and the money from the sell of the home goes to the 1st loan before the liens are paid.

Credit card companies (or whoever are collecting for them) do not usually like to put leins on personal property because it takes them time to dispose of it to get their money out of it; so no. But... if they get a judgment against her so they can collect, the money will have to come from somewhere and anything in a bank account is fair game.
