Hi. When you say they cleaned it, what did they clean. Yes, a toilet will still flush without a vent, but a vent on a toilet is very important as it keeps the toilet trap from siphoning when other fixtures in the home are discharged. Every fixture needs a trap, and every trap need a vent. However, if the city was jetting the main city sewer and you got sewer back up through your toilet, vent or no vent, I would think it is the citys problem, not yours. All depends on the fine print. Please let us know more about your situation with as much description as possible. Many old homes did not require individual vents for every fixture, and would be considered as grandfathered in as pertaining to code. Im curious here, so please let us know more.

I agree with Dad. Back up North when I was a young man we had older homes that had one 4" line from sewer to roof vent with all fixtures draining into it, It will flush but siuphonage can and will occur. Regards, Tom
