My microwave oven (GE) works intermittently. It will work for 45 sec and turn itself off. Then after waited 5 or ten minutes, it will work again, but only briefly. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? Yes, throw it away as it is broken and you can't really repair this yourself and the cost of repairing this is probably more than what you paid for it or pay for a new one. Don't open it up as the microwave packs quite a whallop in stored up electrical charge and you could seriously injure yourself with the electrical discharge.
I threw my oven away back in June 2007 after it blew out literally from the wall during an electrical strike on my home. The cord was burned and the little night light in the same outlet blew itself across the room!! I just threw the whole shebang out and have done just fine without it. My aching knees now do not bother me due to the radiaiton emitted by the oven going into my joints. Even my 26 y/o son remarked that his joints did not ache anymore after about a month of no oven. The oven was only about 5 years old as well.
The rays of the microwave literally denutrient your food and when ingested you do not retain any nutrition that is left in the nuked food. Try an experiment. Nuke some water in the oven and use that cooled down water to water one houseplant. The plant will wither and die shortly. You are doing the same thing to your body if you heat water up for say coffee or tea. That's why I don't have a nuke machine in my home anymore.

It is dirty. You need to get the special screwdrivers and clean it out and then it will work. DrTom4444
