I have a wiring question. I have a switch that has a standard 14/2 power coming in with 14/3 (red, white black, ground) going to a series of outlets, 4 outlets in total. The switch controlled only the last outlet( for lamps). I want the same set up but I cannot seem to wire this right. I want outlet 1,2 and 3 hot and #4 switched. Suggestions?

Assuming that the switch has hot (black) coming into it and switched (red) coming out - simply wire outlets 1, 2, and 3 with black and white, and outlet 4 with red and white. But I don't understand what you mean by "the switch controlled only the last outlet" and "I want outlets 1,2, and 3 hot and #4 switched" - isn't that what you already have?

Thanks for responding. I have all outlets hot right now. I want only the first 3 hot and the last one switched for lamps. I have tried different scenarios but I cannot seems to make the last out let switched by itself. I will try this when I get home.

Harold,

If the poster's request is to have outlet #4 controlled by switch one, with switch one outlet being the source then I don't think this plan would work.

Switch one should be 14/3. But I would use black (source) top switch and pigtailed from the 14/2 black as the constant feed to the remaining three receptacles.

I would use the red, at the switch as the "switched" leg to receptacle #4.

At receptacle #4, I would splice the black constant feed to the black of a 14/2 cable and feed Black/White and ground to the remaining three receptacles.

So my question to you is whether we are accomplishing the same thing or your method is the correct way? I do mean this as a question.

switch that has a standard 14/2 power coming in with 14/3 (red, white black, ground) going to a series of outlets,

The switch controlled only the last outlet( for lamps)

I want the same set up

My understanding of what is desired is 4 outlets, three hot all the time and the last one switched.
Switch being fed.
