Hello,
I have a 3 yr old pomeranian. Since the day I brought her home, she has refused to eat dog food, both wet and dry. I have tried EVERYTHING. I have tried every brand, every combination. She just refuses to eat. I have even went as far as putting her food down for her, and left it there, and did not feed her anything, thinking that if she got hungry enough she would eat it. Nope, we almost lost her twice because she refused to eat. So, I have to cook her up something for her to eat. Whatever, it is we are having that night. But, if I feed her the same thing the next morning, she won't touch it again. Now, her coat and skin are showing the effects of not having the right diet. And, before you ask... I have tried bought the Vitagravy and other products that you would use... she refuses that too. I just don't know what to do with her. It should also be noted that we have cats. And, yes, I have tried mixing the cat food with the dog food and weening away the cat food to just dog food... that did not work either. PLEASE HELP!

Please do not feed cat food to your dog. Cat food has a different make up that is good for only cats.

I would first suggest to stop switching foods around. Purchase a dry kibble that is known for hits palatability. I've had a lot of luck with Pro Plan All Stages with picky eaters. Warm up the food in the microwave or heat it up on the stove. The heat will allow the kibbles to release their oils and smell better to the dog. Stop giving her table scraps. Unless the human food is in its purest form, then human food is no good for her and will actually make her sick. The topical gravies are not that palatable.. not to mention will give your dog the runs. Just find a food that is in your budget and is what you feel is going to nutritonally complete your dog and STICK TO IT... If you insist on canned food, then keep with the same brand.

Healthy dogs do not starve themselves. They will eat eventually. If your dog is starving herself to the point of becoming sick and weak, then there is something wrong with your dog. I would highly suggest to take her to the vet for an exam. That's not normal, she might be sick. Dogs that have cancer are very picky eaters and it food looks like it'll make them sick. I don't mean to scare you with the ugly "C" word, but any type of infection that is systemic will cause a dog to not want to eat.

Tiny toy breeds are actually very picky eaters and will refuse food long enough to go into hypoglycemic shock and die. They are also known for being one of the groups of dogs that will actually starve themselves to death with food right in front of them just because they did not like that flavor. I have a Bolognese and the vet and I have been forced to syringe and tube feed him many times just to keep him from starving to death. I know that once he starts vomiting yellow foam, it won't be long before he goes into shock. He is given 15cc of Karo syrup at once along with a small blob of Nutri-Cal Puppy and then (if he doesn't start eating on his own within 10 minutes), he is syringe or tube fed a special Hill's diet that appears to consist of mainly pork liver.
Talk to your vet and set up a plan; much like Type 1 diabetic people, this can turn serious quickly.
