I keep getting αll these pop-ups αnd I've αlreαdy blocked them through the internet pop up blocking or whαtever but it dosen't work I even put the sites down αs restricted but they keep on comming-- whαt should I do? I wαnt to downloαd αn αnti pop up progrαm but which one should I choose because I def. do not wαnt to deαl with some sort of virus lαter-- I'm not much of α computer genius.. so leαve it simple--thαnks :rolleyes:

Using a pop up blocker doesn't fix the underlying issue.
You have some adware on your system.

Here's my usual C&P for cases like this:


When was the last time you did some serious maintenance on your system ?

System maintenance includes:
Defrag
FULL patching
Virus scanning
Spyware scanning
removal of rubish files

Defrag is an inbuilt function in XP.
Open My Computer > Right click C: > Tools Tab and its there.

To make sure everything is running fine run both anti virus and anti spyware apps in normal AND safe modes. (make sure that they are updated first ! ;)) (AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) is good and free AV)
(A couple of good removal tools are Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) and Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/))

ALso an on line virus and spyware scanner is Trend Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/)

Just a note; actively running two AV's on one machine can cause problems.
So if you are thinking about it make sure your current one is disabled first.
Same thing applies to online scanners as well.

Removal of junk files is easy with CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) a free app that does exactly what

If all this fails then a repair install may be in order:

Basically this installs windows over the top of your current setup.
So you don't loose any information you already have.

Also it might be wise to switch to a more secure browser like Firefox.

Sara, if you follow the instructions, not only will you be pop up free, but your system will run a lot better.

The other thing is some of these things need to be done in safe-mode during which your off-line.
Be very careful about inviting others to remotely control your computer -- that takes a lot of trust.

I agree with Curlyben - just follow the instructions he gave.
I use Spybot Search&Destroy (freeware) and it works very well - just make sure that you update it regularly and use the Immunize button; it's a bit fiddly to use at first because it doesn't do everything automatically (I have no idea why) but press all the buttons and you'll figure it out. ;)

If you are using Firefox (have you updated to Firefox 2.0 yet?) then I thoroughly recommend downloading "Adblock Plus" - it's a brilliant plug-in that allows you to subscribe to a "pop-up database" that will block most stuff for you. The only annoyance with Adblock Plus is that it sometimes blocks harmless features on web pages, so if something seems to be missing on a web page, switch it off to see all the content.

Yeα I updαted my Firefox.. but αnywho I still get sent to my other internet thing "internet explorer" --αnd yeα I've tried putting Firefox αs my umm defαult? Keep trying Sara, you've got a spyware problem somewhere - just run an anti-sypware scan and you'll probably catch it.

I just had a thought... What anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are you using?
There are some phoney rogue products out there that actually add spyware!

Please go back to my original post and try everything.

Sarai, I have had a lot of problems with my computer I suggest you get (avg) its an antivirus that gets rid of all types of viruses. About a year ago I had the same problem I got popups without being connected to the internet. You have a trogen virus get avg 7.5 and scan your computer it will take a couple of hours for the first scan but after that you should be running smoothly.
