Hi I wonder if you can help. I live in a first floor tenement flat in Edinburgh and there is a strong smell of either hydrogen sulfate or sewage coming up through one of the floorboards as you enter into the living room. This smell seems to coincide with the man upstairs having his toilet removed to install a new bathroom suite but is not directly below or above this and is now located close to the stack which is in a different area of our house. I have spoken to the handyman who is fitting the bathroom upstairs but he cannot explain why this might have happened. He has sealed/covered the connector between the pipe and where the toilet would be but that doesn't seem to have improved matters. Yesterday I thought I also notice the smell in the main stairwell. This was definitely a rotten egg smell! Please can you help? Thanks. Amy

Sure sounds like something's open somewhere. Have the handy man perform a smoke test on the drainage and vents. It's simple, Purchase a smoke bomb from your plumbing supply house and drop it down a vent. Any smoke coming out of a wall and you've located the source of the smell, Good luck, Tom
