I've been employed with my present company since 2009. I've paid for my own health insurance since 2009 (high deductible), though would like to switch to my company's health insurance. I was diagnosed with MS in June 2011 and it's a pre-existing condition. What do I need to know because of this before I switch?

You need a one-on-one appointment with the NEW insurance company. If may be to your benefit to continue your own policy.

There can be loopholes - my late husband was diabetic. The new policy (had he taken it) would have paid for treatment of his diabetes. In little teeny tiny print we found out it would NOT pay for treatment of any underlying conditions due to diabetes - such as cardiac, etc.

Thank you so much for your quick response! I will contact Aetna.

Generally there is a time frame during which pre-existing conditions are not covered. With my coverage it was 11 months. Your benefits people should be able to tell you what that is.

If you have a high deductible plan you may not reach the deductible for that period.

Many times there are only certain times there are open enrollment. So first you have to find out even if you can get the insurance.
Next not all will cover any pre existing condition, or have conditions on it. You need to find that out.

Next and a serious thought, how stable is your company and your job, if you were to lose your job or your company would close, you can not ever buy coverage that would cover your pre existing conditions from private sourse
