View Full Version : Barn polarity problem solved?

I posted about a month ago about an electrical problem I was having with two barns, the second barn being fed from the first, with a 20 amp switch in between. Anyway, when the switch was off to the 2nd barn, all the outlets in the first barn were correctly wired. 120 volts from hot to neutral/ground. However, when I would turn on the power to the 2nd barn, the hot and neutral would be reversed everywhere (in both barns), I would get 120 volts from Neutral to hot/ground.
Anyway, I think I solved the problem. After isolating the problem to the second barn, I searched in every box and found no wiring errors. In frustration, I went into the first junction box in the second barn and crossed the hot and neutral wires; when I turned the power back on to the 2nd barn, the lights dipped significantly for about ten seconds (in both barns) and then the breaker tripped. (Lights were the only thing on). After this, I put the wires back where they were before. Now, all the wiring is correct, whether the 2nd barn is turned on. I get 120 volts from hot to ground and neutral, and none between neutral and ground. I'm not really sure what corrected it; I'm thinking maybe I had a neutral issue, or maybe a neutral and ground wire were touching somehow? Should I be looking for a problem?
Thanks

I think all you did by reversing the wiring and causing the CB to trip was to clear a short. The short may be open, but there is damage done to some wiring or connections.

Problem solved, but the damage is there, but hidden.

Maybe I'll do some more digging and find the problem then.
