What happens to the reading on the scale when the elevator stops moving?

Think about F=ma. When the elevator stops moving that means that the velocity has changed, which means there was an acceleration, right? Hence a force on the mass that is sitting on the scale. The question is: in which direction is the acceleration? And hence does it add to, or subtract from, the regular force of gravity that the scale measures?

Post back with the particulars on this problem, and you're answer, and we'll check it for you.
