I have installed tankless water heaters in several states. Both indoor units and outdoor units. My hat is off to them. I like them in many ways better than tank units. One of which is the on demand savings you have. It does not heat until you turn on the faucet. The older tank units leave you waiting for hot water and these do the same. You can tweek your hot system with additon units. I never go electric unless it is for this reason. But I have hooked up electric where no gas was available or the venting was just impractible. It supplied a shower and downstairs bathroom quite well. I have used tankless to temper incoming Illinois water before it hits the main tank as well. This just initially saves one burn of the tanked mdel though. After it cools form non use - it will reheat the standing water. I had also used several ball valves to isolate the tanks should either one fail... since then ( about 4 years ago) the owners saw the tank leaking and shut it down. Using the bypass valves I had installed so either could be used while replacing faulty one, they just turned off the tank and drained it and have been using the tankless. This tankless was the small bosch model rated for only one fixture as well. This is a huge house they are using this for and they have a large sunken tub as well and the second floor of this old house... so in retrospect - my experiences with tankless have been very very good. Also, in some areas of the country the water heaters were actually put in the attic. I ran into this in virginia beach several times... use you rimagination here... try to remove the old water heater from the attic through an access hole!! Yes, I talked them into a tankless... no need to try to get another up through those little holes!!
