I was filling out my New York state tax return, and I think I made a mistake on line 45 of form IT-203.

I am a non-resident trying to pay taxes for 2010, but when I enter the numbers something is weird. My NY state amount is 421.71 / Federal amount is 32032.11 = .0132

After taking the standard deduction (left over is 16032.11) times .0132, it says that I owe 211.62. Is this correct? I have to pay about 50% in state taxes in NY?

Please Help. Thanks.

Your federal income was $32,032. That is the figure on which the tax software is probably is determining your NY state tax liability.

If you only earned $422 in NY state, you need to show that fact on the NY state income column of the Form IT-203 so the tax sofwtare "knows" to assess the tax on only the $422.

Where did the figure $16032 come from? Line 44 on your IT-203 should show what your NY State tax would be if all your income was taxable. If your federal AGI is $32K there's no way your NY state tax bill would be $16.3K. If you can tell us what you have for lines 31, 37 and 38 on IT-203 we can probably get this straightened out.
