View Full Version : Carrier Weather Maker 8000 flame sensor

Hello,

I have a Carrier weather maker 8000 and have received error 34. I would like to find the flame sensor so that I may clean it but don't know what it looks like. I have surfed the site and am unable to find it. Can anybody help with this.

Look for a red connection wire near the to the top (or left) of the burner/heat exchanger. The unit above is around 4 inches long. Mine is bent at an angle.

Thank you *SO* much for posting a picture of the flame sensor. I was able to locate, remove and 'clean' the sensor. It seems to have done the trick. I am so appreciative that you posted -- mine was bent at an angle too.

Why the unit above is called "flame-sensor"? I have a Carrier Weather Maker 8000 that's failing to ignite and am trying to diagnose the problem step by step. The closest thing in my setup to the unit above is a probe bend at almost right angle position in the flow of the first (out of four) gas jets. To me it seems that it should glow red and serve as gas igniter, not a sensor. I am at a loss where to begin to diagnose what the problem is, and of course I get the cod 12 and 34 as well. I would dread just blindly have to replace the board gas furnace Carrier WeatherMaster 8000, mdl: 580XT080-16, serial 1499A4528

Just for the heck of it. I'd appreciate any suggestion how to methodically diagnose the root cause.
BTW, is there a way to bypass the thermostat input. Thanks

I have a Carrier Weathermaster 8000 also. Let me share some of the problems and solutions.

1. Last year the furnace would not produce any heat. I woke up one morning and the house was 62 degrees F. I turned off the breaker to the furnace to clear any errors on the card. Each time I would turn the panel breaker off and back on, and each time the furnace would go through its start-up sequence and then shutdown- the blower motor would start, then the Inducer Motor would start spinning, then I would hear a few clicks- then a shutdown.
At first I replaced the Hot Surface Ignitor(HSI)about $70.00 and retried the same process(turn breaker off/on) and the furnace still would not start-up, it would still go through its start-up sequence and shut off. To rule out the HSI, unplug the wiring harness and with a good multi-meter, check the resistance to the HSI and the resistance should be 55 to 75 ohms. If no resistance, the HSI is faulty and must be replaced.In this case the HSI was good. The next step was to stick my meter leads into the plug coming from the controller. Place your meter leads into the plug and turn your meter to read voltage. Reset the breaker and let the furnace go through its start-up. First you'll hear the Blower Motor Start up, then the Inducer Motor will start, then you'll hear a few clicks in the controller(relays picking up) and then you should see your meter reading 120 volts for about 30 seconds. If there's no voltage at all, the problem is a solder joint in your circuit board.
This is where it gets technical. Draw a picture of the controller and sketch where each wire must go and mark every wire before removing controller. This is very important! So take your time.
Once the controller is remove, carefully open up the cover and again, be very careful!
Once the circuit board is exposed, examine each solder joint at the HSIR relay. The schematic is available on your furnace cover, that you removed to look inside the furnace. In my case the solder joint came loose and turned into a bad connection, and wasn't powering the HSI. A simple fix is top re-solder that joint with a solder gun and some electronic solder. Then re-install. This should fix the problem.

2.Once again my furnace would not start- one year later.

In this case, my problem was the Flame sensor. Simply remove the sensor and clean with a fine scotch pad and retry. If this fails, purchase a new one and install.

IMPORTANT NOTE: when replacing the HSI- WEAR RUBBER GLOVES. If not- the natural oil in your fingers will rapidly deteriorate the surface of the HSI- instead of 3 years service- you'll get 3 months if you touch it.

GOOD LUCK- you just save $500

The resistance (ohm) between electrode and body (the bracket that screws in) is infinite. I presume that means it's bad. Where do I buy one? Any suggestions where to get it online? Much appreciate. Just to clarify, I admit I confused two different elements, the flame sensor (FS), and the hot surface ingnitor (HSI). In my furnace, which has four gas jets, FS sits in the leftmost jet and HSI in the rightmost. My HSI is "Furnace ignitor norton 271m" model, and can be easily found on Internet

For around ~$30.-. For sure, when I took it out and measured infinite resistance (open circuit), I concluded it must've gone bad. Can't wait to get the new one I just ordered, get that warm and fuzzy feeling that heat is flowing in the house again. Keep my fingers crossed!
