I recently took a urine sample to my doctor and received a leter back saying I have quite a lot of pus cells but shows no infection, the doctor has told me to do another urine sample in a red top bottle. What could these pus cells mean?

The Doctor said there is pus but there is no infection? That's what the letter says?
It all really depends on how MANY pus cells were found and if this was a sterile specimen (cath) or a clean catch specimen.

It never said how many just they were quite a lot of pus cells, yes that is all the letter said and that the lab wanted a red top with urine sample in to repeat the test. So they have left me wondering what could be wrong when they have said there is no infection.
It could be a number of things actually.
The red top can test for infection, cancer, diabetes, or kidney disease just to name a few.

Question - does the red top (presumably on the vial) indicate some type of specialized testing?

Yes, it does. It contains a preservative in the vial that is used for certain diagnostic testing.
