Hi I am on the Copper Coil but suspect I am pregnant, I never feel for my strings (as I do not have a clue what I am looking for). I have never been pregnant before, my last period was around the 12th September until approximately 18th (these are not exact dates) I had sex on the 23rd September, and approximately a week after - to date I have been experiencing saw nipples, a kind of tingling sensation this is not my norm as my nipples never hurt, my breast also feel harder than usual. I have been bloating. Also for almost 3 days I felt constantly hot and I kept asking those around me if they were hot -I had to lay down because I nearly passed out and felt dizzy. I had a very slight pink in my discharge. I have had back ache, constantly tired (although this is not unusual for me). I had cramps, and shooting pains of which I tried to recognize if they were just on one side and noticed that it did occur usually on my left side. I have pains very similar to a period about 2 days ago and due tomorrow. Although today I am bleeding and I feel as though I am having my period although I usually have very heavy periods and today has been light (not even one sanitary towels worth). I am waiting to see if the bleeding persists, and I may take a pregnancy test next week. I was just wondering if anyone could put my mind at ease? Any replies would be appreciated!

An IUD or copper coil has one or two threads attached to the end that hang a little way down from your uterus into the top of your vagina. The doctor or nurse SHOULD have taught you how to feel the threads to make sure the IUD is still in place. You should be checking this a few times in the first month the coil is fitted and then after each period or at regular intervals.

It is very unlikely that an IUD will come out, but if you cannot feel the threads, or if you think you can feel the IUD itself, you may not be protected against pregnancy. This is why it is so important that you know how to check for the threads and do this on a regular basis.

I am not a doctor so I am unable to say whether the symptoms you have been experienceing are to do with a pregnancy or anything else. I think it is important that you do a pregnancy test.

You can do a pregnancy test from the first day of your missed period. If you have regular periods, you'll probably know when this is. If you're not sure when your next period is due, you can do a pregnancy test 21 days (three weeks) after you last had unprotected sex. Use the first urine of the day which will be the most concentrated so if you are pregnant it will be more likely to detect the presence of the pregnancy hormone HGC.

If you get a negative test and still think you may be pregnant, wait a week and do another test. If you are still concerned about that then see a doctor.
