I have had a recent death in the family and just want to know if trying to communicate with that loved one via Ouija board could go wrong possibly opening a door without my knowledge of it. With proper protection in place before use will spirits be able to just come and go. My goal is to do this without creating a doorway into my currently safe home.

There is no way to safeguard using a ouija board. What do you mean 'with proper protection" there isn't any. Do not be too hasty in trying to communicate with the dead this way, Caught.

Tick is right, thinking you can safeguard yourself before using a Ouija board is like a naïve teenager thinking a condom is 100% protection... something can ALWAYS happen when you play with that fire. This makes no difference what-so-ever if your house is haunted now or not. DO NOT PLAY IN THE OCCULT.

Calm yourselves! I'm not going to attempt anything. That's why I asked after all I have to start somewhere. Thanks for the input. Stick with the decaf. I'm out

Hello CaughtAFaygo. Sorry to hear about your relative passing over.
It's good that you asked other opinions before doing it-respect to you for that!-
Ouija Boards are a bad juju! If your relative wants too & if he or she can communicate with you then they will.
Try to reach them through meditation or dreams but please leave the evil board alone!
The word 'Ouija' is coming from 2 different language-French & German with 'oui' and 'ja' both meaning 'yes'.
So you have a YesYes board! The only 'yes' you'll get from it is when the evil spirits realize they have a window & you most certainly don't want to open those up!
There's no 100% protections no matter how many garlic cloves you eat or how many crosses you wear!
Good luck! You're a lot braver than I am!
