I have not signed a lease in 3 years and pay the added month to month fee for rent each month. My wife and I are in the process of closing on a new home, and our landlord said we owe them 60days notice? I don't think this is correct. Please help. We let them know verbally that we intent to vacate on October 30,2011. The posted a letter on our door today that states we are held to a 60 day notice and are responsible to 2 months rent?
Help!

Despite the fact that you have not signed a lease renewal, the terms of the original lease remain in effect (except for expiration and rental). If the lease specifies a 60 notice period, then you are required to give 60 days notice.
Also, according to TX law (Texas Termination of Lease Law - Lease - Landlord Tenant (http://landlordtenant.uslegal.com/lease/texas-termination-of-lease-law/)), you have to give written notice of at least one MONTH. This means that if you did not give written notice prior to 10/1, then you could not terminate the least until 11/30.
As soon as you started looking to buy, you should have reviewed the lease and the law to determine when you would have to give notice.
