My car has been running really crap lately and a few weeks ago it broke down all together. It would start fine and idle okay until I started driving, then the first time I stopped at a corner the revs would drop and then it would die. Everything pointed to the carburetor (Twin Carb), so I took it in to a carby specialist and they said it was definitely the source of the problem. I had the carbys rebuilt and the car was drivable again.

The new problems are: The car still idles rough when the engine is cold. When the engine is cold and I start it, for the first few minutes of driving it has trouble building up speed and getting through the gears, this problem goes away when the car warms up. Engine smell coming into the car when I start driving.

I don't know whether I'm on the right track or not (Im no mechanic), but the reason I ask where the fuel filter is, is because I want to replace the filter and the O2 sensor. If I shouldn't do this or you can give me any help, please, please help me out. I'm having my first child in January so I want my car to be as reliable as it can be until I can afford a new and better car.

Thanks in advance guys, hope someone can help!

The fuel filter may cause some of those symptoms.
It is located in the right rear of the engine compartment.

Be sure to remove the negative battery cable and gas cap (to depressurize the system), before removing the old fuel filter.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

I swear I've checked the whole engine compartment and I can't find it. I originally assumed it would be up the back attached to the firewall, so I started looking there and I can't seem to find it. Before you ask, yes, I do know what it looks like lol.

Anyway I'll check again, and thanks for the tips Tx. I already had this page bookmarked, https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/cars-trucks/faq-how-troubleshoot-repair-maintain-hondas-selected-other-vehicles-46563.html#post224689 so in a way you had already helped me out

I still can't find the fuel filter. I'm in Australia by the way, I don't know if that means it would be in a different place or anything but yeah, anyway. I uploaded 2 photos of the engine, the black box at the rear left is where I assumed the filter would be, but I opened it and checked and it wasn't in there so, I'm starting to go crazy trying to find this thing, its ridiculous.

Your vehicle should still have fuel injection.
The next option is to identify the fuel rail where the fuel injectors are mounted and follow the fuel line(s) down and back until you find the filter. Find the fuel rail and then the pressure regulator/dampener. That should lead you to the filter.

Ditto for CaptainRich's suggestion.

Does my car even have fuel injectors? I know it has 2 carburetors, I didn't think a car could have Carbs and fuel injection. Didn't fuel injection replace Carburetors? Anyway, I'll keep looking for it, thanks guys.

Just had a thought, is there any chance the fuel filter could be in the fuel tank?

That's possible. Still, I would follow the fuel line from the carburetors to the fuel tank--you may see a fuel filter along the rocker panel.

So I gave up and went for a drive down to my mechanic. He said to take it back to the guy that fixed the carburetor and see if he could have a look. The Carburetor guy said its probably the choke. Any thoughts on that? He said he'll need it overnight so I'll have to take it in next week when I have the time. He said he'll change the fuel filter for me for free too, so hopefully everything works out.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll post to let everyone know how it goes so if anyone else has the same problem it might help them too.

The fuel filter is in the rear of the car next to the fuel tank ,you have to jack up the rear wheels on the passenger side to get to it .
