Help, we have a 5 month old Golden Retriever puppy who we have been working with potty training. Its going pretty well, I'd say about 80% there! But a couple weeks ago my husband was out of town and I woke up at 2:30 am with the puppy sleeping next to me and we were both in a puddle of pee! He didn't even realize he had done it. The next day he was awake, lying on the floor, looking at me and just peed! (he knows to bark or go to the door when he has to go out) After that I don't think he has done it any more until today, laying on the floor awake and all of a sudden there is a river on my hardwood floor. Later in the day we are outside in the screened in sunroom, he is laying there awake and another river! What is going on? Any ideas? Should we go to the vet?

Yes take your dog to the vet. The dog could have some kind of bladder infection. You need to make sure before it gets out of control.

I agree but we know nothing about yhow to feed, water or exercise him. Maybe you can fill us in on that. Its up to each owner but I would never allow a puppy to sleep in my bed, he is going to grow and I am not.

He is otherwise normal, he eats regularly, and plays and runs outside. He is full of energy, regular puppy stuff. He does't show any signs of being "sick" or that he doesn't feel good. And it isn't everyday, like I said he goes a week(+) with out doing this. I will call the vet Monday.

I would have him checked by your vet for a UTI or bladder infection. It could be inconinence, in which case there is medication that can help your situation, or he may out grow it. I had a male dog who had a touch of incontinence, but as his body matured he out grew it. For the mean time I would make an appropriate sleeping area for you new pup, a kennel in the bedroom perhaps. If you use a doggy pilly, wrap it in a garbage bag, and put towels over top to make the clean up a little easier for you.

You are not being asked to take him to the vet's for the "normal" part, it's the unknown, "not normal" part that you allude to in your introductory explanation.

Proper feeding and training techniques have no involvement here... your dog is exhibiting 'abnormal' elimination behavior, and you need to find out why. No one here is able to do more than guess what may be going on. Even a long list of known urinary tract problems would be of no help. Only a first hand examination and possible testing by a professional trained in the subject can determine and suggest corrective measures. Take him to the vet. Don't wait to see if it will go away by itself... if it does, the 'not knowing why' will drive you just a little crazy after you forget how glad your are when he quits. And, how long are you willing to wait to see if it will?

Dogs do not normally empty their bladders while sleeping. Even if you were forcing him to drink and putting him to 'bed' immediately after, without a chance to go outdoors, he would still wake and go somewhere besides his sleeping arrangements to urinate. I would be very surprised if he was dreaming he was already squatting in the yard and simply 'wet his bed', (nor would I even begin to know how to prove, or disprove it).
