Something on the armature shaft slides towards the windings when the motor starts. There is a grinding noise like a gear is trying to engage. Then, whatever it is, en-gauges and the motor runs normal turning the dryer drum. Is this something that can be replaced or is it new motor time?

I would replace the motor. The part is the start switch. DrTom4444
