Our furnace would not turn on during the first cool day. Technician came out and found 2 gallons of water in the furnace box- motor shorted, everything damp, not good. We recently had sprinkler system installed 2 months ago outside and one of the new sprinkler heads was spraying water around the outside furnace intake pipe valve. Technician believes 2 months of spraying (3 days a week) was drawn into the pipe towards the furnace inside and collected. Does this sound possible?

Sounds like a reasonable answer to your problem. The only other way for water to get into the furnace is if the A coil pan was leaking or the basement flooded. Looks like you will need a splash shield installed around the furnace pipe. Make sure the person doing the install knows what they are doing OR it can create other problems.
