Let me take a whack at it Mark.
Pathaniaks,
You're asking about joining two cast iron pipes together, correct?
That's going to depend on the pipes. If they are bell and spicket then we use a rubber insert called a "doughnut" or a lead and oakum poured and caulked joint. If the pipes have bare ends we use a No-Hub Coupling to connect the two.
