If you are asking about a cracked heat exchanger, then normally once the heat exchanger has failed, you are best off to replace the complete furnace, unless the furnace is still under warranty, then it's a manufacturers call. You can replace (not repair) the heat exchanger but it usually involves dismanteling the whole furnace. This is labor intensive, time consuming, and just really not worth it on an older unit. If you do decide to have a new heat exchanger installed, it is definatley a job for a trained hvac tech, as there are gaskets and seals that need to be replace and positioned correctly, as well as test to perform validating correct operation after install. If the heat exchanger has failed, its time for a new furnace, unless of course, its under warranty, then I would even fight for a complete new furnace under warranty.
