Lyric finder search engines aren't working... the song is about an elderly man who lost his wife... the promised each other if one got to heaven before the other... "if you get there before me"... and (he never cried before in "all his years"... that's all I know hope that helps... It's killing me I can't think of the artist or find it on the net... Thanks

You didn't have a lot to go on...
First the words reminded me of a video I saw of "Josh Turner's song Would you go with me"(about childhood sweethearts and as they get older she dies and he's looking for her...
A cool video (lyrics below)-then I also found others after that
"Would You Go With Me"
Would you go with me if we rolled down streets of fire
Would you hold on to me tighter as the summer sun got higher
If we roll from town to town and never shut it down
Would you go with me if we were lost in fields of clover
Would we walk even closer until the trip was over
And would it be okay if I didn't know the way
If I gave you my hand would you take it
And make me the happiest man in the world
If I told you my heart couldn't beat one more minute without you, girl
Would you accompany me to the edge of the sea
Let me know if you're really a dream
I love you so, so would you go with me
[Instrumental]
Would you go with me if we rode the clouds together
Could you not look down forever
If you were lighter than a feather
Oh, and if I set you free, would you go with me
If I gave you my hand would you take it
And make me the happiest man in the world
If I told you my heart couldn't beat one more minute without you, girl
Would you accompany me to the edge of the sea
Help me tie up the ends of a dream
I got to know, would you go with me
I love you so, so would you go with me
Then I changed the words around a bit and found this... this may be what you're looking for! Hope so:
IF YOU GET THERE BEFORE I DO LYRICS
I read a note my grandma wrote back in 1923
Grandpa kept it in his coat and he showed it once to me
He said boy you might not understand
But a long, long time ago
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none
But I love your grandma so
We had this crazy plan to meet
And run away together
Get married in the first town we came to and live forever
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet instead
I found this letter
And this is what it said
If you get there before I do
Don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not going to let you down
Darling wait and see
And between now and then 'til I see you again
I'll be loving you, love me
I read those words just hours before my grandma past away
In the door way of a church
Where me and grandpa stopped to pray
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my 15 years
But as he said these words to her
His eyes filled up with tears
If you get there before I do
Don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not going to let you down
Darling wait and see
And between now and then 'til I see you again
I'll be loving you, love me
Between now and then 'til I see you again
I'll be loving you, love me

The latter is what I was looking for... I know I didn't have a lot to go on but you got it... in fact I got it like an hour later... I might have got too hasty in asking on here... and the first one you listed... I do know that one... very nice... thank you for your time and effort I appreciate it march 357

Love, Me
(Skip Ewing/Max T. Barnes)
I read a note my grandma wrote back in nineteen twenty-three.
Grandpa kept it in his coat, and he showed it once to me. He said,
"Boy, you might not understand, but a long, long time ago,
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none, but I loved your Grandma so."
We had this crazy plan to meet and run away together.
Get married in the first town we came to, and live forever.
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet, instead
Of her, I found this letter, and this is what it said:
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through;
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not going to let you down, darling wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.
I read those words just hours before my Grandma passed away,
In the doorway of a church where me and Grandpa stopped to pray.
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my fifteen years;
But as he said these words to her, his eyes filled up with tears.
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through;
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not going to let you down, darling wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.
Between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.

I know the chores:
Every single day someone's judging me
The way I live my life and how I live in these streets
Look into my eyes can you feel my pain
Tell me how it feels to be left out in the rain
Every single day someonebody's judging me
The way I live my life and how I live in these streets
Look into my eyes can you feel my pain
And so on
