We have two lights on a two way switch. We removed one and put a remote controlled fan. The fan worked separately only on the remote and the other light worked on the two way switches. We are replacing fan with a new one but hooked it up and it works with the remote only when the other light is on, contrary to the way the old fan worked.

Unfortunately you can do what you are doing. The remote can only operate the fan if your switch is already in the ON position. That means the fan will never be powered unless that other light is on. It's a single pole or a 3 way, no such thing as a two way.

Please restate your situation. Your post is a little confusing. You said that you have two lights controlled by two 3-way switches. Then you say you replaced an old fan with a new one but you can't get it to work the way the old one did.

In addition to restating what you are trying to do, tell us what wires you have in the ceiling box where you are mounting the fan/light.

We know it can be done because we took one down a few months ago that worked properly but can't remember how it was wired.

Hk's question is important, we know you took it down and it USED to work, BUT:
"tell us what wires you have in the ceiling box where you are mounting the fan/light".
