My dog seems to cower when food is served I pick him up and bring him to the bowl but he really is uncomfortable and backs off! He eventually eats it but in his own time.

How old was he when you got him, and how long have you had him, and are there other animals in the house?
He may have been bullied before, so let him eat at his own pace. Pat him and praise him before and after he eats.

Where are you putting his bowl that you have to 'pick him up and bring him to the bowl'? Is this an area where he is allowed to go even when not eating? He may be uncomfortable with where you are feeding him especially if it is a smooth surface.

He may be trying to show you that he understands his place in the pack. He could have been 'bullied' but some animals through interacting with their litter mates and mother learn to wait their turn.

He may also be looking for permission. Permission to him is you leaving the bowl so that he can approach on his own.

Don't make a big deal of feeding time. Make certain the feeding area is comfortable for him (his feet aren't sliding out from under him, the bowl isn't too high if you are using a stand feeder, people aren't walking through the area, etc.) Call him and set his bowl down and walk away. If he is hesitant to eat even then, you can pretend to eat some of the food before putting bowl in its place. That way he thinks he is getting what you are eating and you have had your portion so he can have his.

Had to spread the rep, but I think Cat's post is bang on.

Why are you picking him up and putting him near the food? He may see this as a sort of punishment, just put the food down in an easily accessible area and walk away, let her eat on her terms. Ever hear of that saying, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink? Well, same idea here. :)
