I'm 32 and last week I was in a bar the barman knew I'd had too much to drink and tried to charge me 468 pounds for 2 drinks I only noticed when I was going to put my PIN in on my card, so I had a bit off a argument with him I then left the bar but on my way out I reached over and took 70 pound out off the till nobody saw me do this. A few days after when I realised what I had done because I couldn't remember doing it because I was that drunk I contacted the doorman and explained what I did and that I wanted to pay back the money he told me I was on camera and that they wanted 700 pound or they will hand the tape over to the police. Can you please give me some advice on what to do and what will the criminal charge be.

Do you have proof of this demand? If so, I would file charges of blackmail against him.

I would go to the police (with your solicitor) and explain that as soon as you realized what you had done, you wanted to return the money and what you were threatened with. If you do that, you will probably get probation at worst.

Agree with Scott, the doorman has committed a worst crime for asking for more money.

On a sober note, why did you not just go back in and put the money back as a tip.

That's a good question. Sending the money back anonymously, leaving it as a tip, somehow returning it would have been better then telling them about it. But that's water under the bridge. Since you did admit it you should now deal with the police.

... when I realised what I had done because I couldn't remember doing it because I was that drunk I contacted the doorman ...

You might want to get your story straight on this point. If you couldn't remember doing it, how did you realize what you had done? Finding the 70 pounds in your pocket jogged your memory?
